Geekly World News – March 14, 2016

Welcome to the latest edition of Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more.

A new trailer is out for Captain America: Civil War and it features our first look at Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man. It’s a very brief glimpse, but I really like what I see so far. Spider-Man is my favourite superhero, and I can’t wait to see this new Marvel Studios version of the character hang out on the big screen with the rest of the Avengers. The movie comes out on May 6, and I’ll be doing everything in my power to be there for the first showing.

Geekly World News – February 25, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more. Today we have the latest on DC Comics, the HTC Vive VR headset, and Pacific Rim 2.

Big changes are coming to DC Comics starting in May. Comic Book Resources has an interview with DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns detailing the company’s goals for their upcoming “Rebirth” event. There’s a lot to unpack here, so for now I’ll just focus on a few particular points that caught my eye. First of all, while DC has stated emphatically that it is not a reboot, they are going to be bringing back certain element’s of the DC universe’s history that were lost in the 2011 “New 52” reboot/relaunch. Johns says, “It’s in the same vein as “Green Lantern: Rebirth” and “The Flash: Rebirth.” Some things alter and change, but it’s more character-driven, and it’s also more about revealing secrets and mysteries within the DC Universe about “Flashpoint” and The New 52 that are part of a bigger tapestry.” It sounds to me like rather than pressing the ‘reset’ button again, Rebirth will recontextualize the changes that the New 52 made so that they can reintroduce pieces of DC history that were thought to have been erased. dcrebirthSpeaking in broader terms, he also says, “It’s an echo of the past, but looking to the future. That’s what I want to do with this. There’s got to be an umbilical cord that goes all the way back to “Action Comics” #1, that connects the whole DC Universe.” While the rest of the line will be relaunched with new #1’s, Action Comics and Detective Comics will return to their original numbering at #957 and #934, respectively, about which Johns says, “that alone, even though it seems small, I think it’s a huge symbol of what we’re trying to do.” He also says that, “This is definitely for comic book readers more than it is for casual readers, just like “Green Lantern: Rebirth,” but that doesn’t mean it’s exclusive of them.” Personally, I started reading DC comics with Green Lantern: Rebirth, and the story itself was good enough that rather than be discouraged by all of the history going over my head, I simply wanted to learn more about this world. For DC to pull off a similar feat with this upcoming event, it will all come down to the strength of the creative teams and their work. I’m cautiously optimistic at this point, but the proof will be in the pudding.

Geekly World News – February 13, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more. Today we’ve got news about Batman v SupermanHarry Potter, and Star Trek. Read on!

The final trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been released, and it’s quite a doozy. Until now I’ve merely been cautiously optimistic about the movie, but now I’m getting truly excited. I think this trailer does a really good job of making you want to see more, unlike the first trailer (which I found to be too dour) and the second trailer (which people have said reveals too much — I’ve managed to avoid it so far). Let’s hope my newfound excitement for the film is justified when it comes to theatres on March 25, 2016.

Geekly World News – January 30, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more.

JLA
The Justice League is coming back to television with Justice League Action, a new animated series currently in the works at Cartoon Network. Bleeding Cool reports that the format will be similar to Teen Titans Go!, in that each episode will be comprised of two 11-minute shorts. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are reprising their roles of Batman and the Joker, respectively, though we do not yet know who will be voicing Superman and Wonder Woman. As a big fan of the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated shows, I can’t wait to see if this new show captures that magic once again.

Geekly World News – January 27, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more.

The first footage of Wonder Woman, the upcoming movie staring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins, has been revealed, and I think it looks great so far. I think the WWI setting is a brilliant choice, and Gal Gadot seems like a great fit for the role. I’m excited to see how it all turns out when the movie is released on June 23, 2017.

Geekly World News – January 22, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more.

Let’s get things started today with the new trailer for Suicide Squad, staring Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jared Leto as the Joker.

I have to admit that I haven’t personally been very excited for this film until now, but this is a very good trailer. Now we just have to wait and see if the movie itself will be able to match the fun of the clever editing around Bohemian Rhapsody found in the trailer. Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer and comes to theatres on August 5, 2016.
