Geekly World News – February 4, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more.

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been announced by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and TT Games, alongside a really charming trailer based on the original trailer for the movie. In addition to the events of the film, the upcoming game will also include elements that fill in the time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. I’m curious to see what that entails when the game is released on June 28, 2016 for a wide variety of platforms.

This isn’t brand new news, but I want to call your attention to the fact that Jeff Lemire’s award-winning comic Essex County, based on the real world location of Essex County, Ontario, is being adapted by CBC for television. I just finished reading the collected edition a few days ago and was blown away by how wonderful it is. I highly encourage all of you to read it and start getting excited for the TV show. As revealed by CBC.ca, the pilot is being written by Aaron Martin, who has previously worked on shows such as Being Erica and Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Lionsgate has announced that Elizabeth Banks has been cast as Rita Repulsa in the upcoming Power Rangers movie, directed by Dean Israelite. She seems like a great fit for the role, and casting someone with comedic chops like hers gives me hope that the movie will have an appropriately goofy tone, rather than trying to play it straight. The movie will be released on March 24, 2017.
