Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more. Today we have a special edition of GWN, featuring some of the trailers for comic book movies that played during the Super Bowl this past Sunday night.
First up, we have Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War, coming to theatres on May 6, 2016.
My anticipation for this movie already couldn’t be any higher, and this trailer is keeping the hype train going at full speed. We get a very clear look at who’s on each side of the battle, though it remains to be seen how stable those allegiances are. I can’t wait to see it all play out on the big screen.
Also promoting Civil War, we have a pretty special Coca-Cola commercial which features the Hulk and Ant-Man.
As far as cross-promotional ads go, where fictional characters are talking about how great a real-world product is, this one is very entertaining. The sense of humour fits Ant-Man’s character, and the visual effects and action are really well done.
Next up is 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool, releasing this Friday, February 12, 2016.
This is just a short spot reminding you that the movie is about to come out, while also riffing on the Super Bowl itself. As such, there’s not much new here, but it still looks great and I’m excited to see how well it does this weekend.
Also from 20th Century Fox is X-Men: Apocalypse, arriving on May 27, 2016.
Considering it’s only 30 seconds long, this teaser is very action packed. We get a good look at new characters like Psylocke and Apocalypse, as well as the recast younger versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm, and they all look great. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last two X-Men movies (First Class and Days of Future Past), and I’m hoping that this one continues that trend of quality.
Lastly, we have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, from director Michael Bay.
I’m not gonna mince words: the last movie was really bad. As a result, I’m not getting my hopes up for this one yet, but I am glad to see them embrace some of the zanier elements of the comics and cartoons. The inclusion of Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, and Casey Jones (played by Arrow’s Stephen Amell), at least piques my interest in the movie. We’ll see if it delivers on June 3, 2016.
Which comic book movies are you going to see this year? Are you willing to give Michael Bay’s take on the TMNT another chance? Let us know in the comments below.
