Geekly World News – March 14, 2016

Welcome to the latest edition of Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more.

A new trailer is out for Captain America: Civil War and it features our first look at Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man. It’s a very brief glimpse, but I really like what I see so far. Spider-Man is my favourite superhero, and I can’t wait to see this new Marvel Studios version of the character hang out on the big screen with the rest of the Avengers. The movie comes out on May 6, and I’ll be doing everything in my power to be there for the first showing.

Geekly World News – March 10, 2016

Welcome to the latest edition of Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more. Today we’re talking about Marvel’s Iron Fist, Microsoft’s Hololens, and Disney’s Big Hero 6.

Marvel’s upcoming Netflix show Iron Fist has found its leading man in Finn Jones, who you might recognize as Ser Loras Tyrell from HBO’s Game of Thrones. The casting for this role has been the subject of much speculation and debate. While the character of Danny Rand has always been portrayed as white, a number of people were hoping that an Asian man would be chosen to play him for a variety of reasons (there are plenty of articles online about this topic if you want to know more). For my part, I think it could work either way depending on how the issue of race is handled in the story. Marvel Studios’ casting has been excellent so far, so I’m certainly willing to see how it turns out before passing judgement.

Geekly World News – February 25, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more. Today we have the latest on DC Comics, the HTC Vive VR headset, and Pacific Rim 2.

Big changes are coming to DC Comics starting in May. Comic Book Resources has an interview with DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns detailing the company’s goals for their upcoming “Rebirth” event. There’s a lot to unpack here, so for now I’ll just focus on a few particular points that caught my eye. First of all, while DC has stated emphatically that it is not a reboot, they are going to be bringing back certain element’s of the DC universe’s history that were lost in the 2011 “New 52” reboot/relaunch. Johns says, “It’s in the same vein as “Green Lantern: Rebirth” and “The Flash: Rebirth.” Some things alter and change, but it’s more character-driven, and it’s also more about revealing secrets and mysteries within the DC Universe about “Flashpoint” and The New 52 that are part of a bigger tapestry.” It sounds to me like rather than pressing the ‘reset’ button again, Rebirth will recontextualize the changes that the New 52 made so that they can reintroduce pieces of DC history that were thought to have been erased. dcrebirthSpeaking in broader terms, he also says, “It’s an echo of the past, but looking to the future. That’s what I want to do with this. There’s got to be an umbilical cord that goes all the way back to “Action Comics” #1, that connects the whole DC Universe.” While the rest of the line will be relaunched with new #1’s, Action Comics and Detective Comics will return to their original numbering at #957 and #934, respectively, about which Johns says, “that alone, even though it seems small, I think it’s a huge symbol of what we’re trying to do.” He also says that, “This is definitely for comic book readers more than it is for casual readers, just like “Green Lantern: Rebirth,” but that doesn’t mean it’s exclusive of them.” Personally, I started reading DC comics with Green Lantern: Rebirth, and the story itself was good enough that rather than be discouraged by all of the history going over my head, I simply wanted to learn more about this world. For DC to pull off a similar feat with this upcoming event, it will all come down to the strength of the creative teams and their work. I’m cautiously optimistic at this point, but the proof will be in the pudding.

Geekly World News – February 19, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more. Today we have the latest on Assassin’s Creed, Daredevil, and Deadpool.

Ubisoft recently announced that there will not be a new Assassin’s Creed released this year, and that the next instalment of the franchise will come in 2017. You may be wondering why this is news, since it’s essentially an announcement that something isn’t happening. However, this will be the first year that an Assassin’s Creed game hasn’t come out since the release of Assassin’s Creed 2 in 2009. I have personally been burnt out on the series for a while, having loved AC2 and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood but getting diminishing returns from then on. I still haven’t gotten around to finishing 2013’s game, and I’m not particularly eager to get to the ones from 2014 or 2015.
assassins-creed-syndicate-et-alI think the series could really benefit from a longer development cycle and more time between releases, and it looks like Ubisoft agrees. Gamespot has some quotes on the matter from Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft CEO. He said, “The goal is not automatically to come back on annual cycle but to come on a regular basis. We saw it was time to give it lots of time so [developers] could really work on the property and all the mechanics to make sure we could take [the series] to another level.” I want to be excited about these games again, so I’ll be hoping that this new strategy works well for them.

Geekly World News – February 13, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more. Today we’ve got news about Batman v SupermanHarry Potter, and Star Trek. Read on!

The final trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been released, and it’s quite a doozy. Until now I’ve merely been cautiously optimistic about the movie, but now I’m getting truly excited. I think this trailer does a really good job of making you want to see more, unlike the first trailer (which I found to be too dour) and the second trailer (which people have said reveals too much — I’ve managed to avoid it so far). Let’s hope my newfound excitement for the film is justified when it comes to theatres on March 25, 2016.

Geekly World News – February 9, 2016

Welcome back to Geekly World News, our round-up of all the biggest news from the world of comics, video games, movies, and more. Today we have a special edition of GWN, featuring some of the trailers for comic book movies that played during the Super Bowl this past Sunday night.

First up, we have Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War, coming to theatres on May 6, 2016.

My anticipation for this movie already couldn’t be any higher, and this trailer is keeping the hype train going at full speed. We get a very clear look at who’s on each side of the battle, though it remains to be seen how stable those allegiances are. I can’t wait to see it all play out on the big screen.
